Varieties of Pleonasm

Pleonasm is a figure of speech that uses redundant words or phrases. Russian language has a number of pleonastic constructions:

  • "Addressing to an address"
  • "Heading in a specified direction"
  • "Using all unused resources" These constructions are examples of c. tautology, where the same idea is expressed twice using different words or phrases.
    Other examples of tautology in Russian:
  • "Собственными глазами" (literally "with own eyes")
  • "Свободная свобода" ("free freedom")
  • "Точное совпадение" ("exact coincidence")
